Pastor John A. Reed

Rev. Dr. John A. Reed, Jr. was born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. The 2nd child of 8, born to the late Rev. John and Mae Ella Reed, Sr. He received his high school education from Washington High School in Stillwater, Ok. and, received a Bachelor of Theology Degree from the Oklahoma School of Religion, Langston, University, Langston, Ok. in May, 1964. He has also done further studies at Central State University and Midwest Christian College. Two Doctor of Divinity Degrees was conferred upon him, one by the University of Central America in June 1989, and the other by Jackson Theological Seminary of North Little Rock, Arkansas in May 2000. The Tennessee School of Religion conferred upon him the Doctor of Humane Letters Degree in August 1994 and in 2004 his Alma Mata, Oklahoma School of Religion also conferred upon him the Doctor of Humane Letters Degree as well.
Dr. Reed is a dynamic and inspiring Gospel Preacher with 50+ years of ministry. He is a diligent shepherd who unselfishly gives of himself to his membership and the community. Dr. Reed is the proud pastor of the Fairview Baptist Church, where he is serving in his 52nd year. However, his works and concerns are not just confined to Fairview, his dream is to integrate Christian love into the entire social and economic fabric of the Oklahoma City Community. Because of his unwavering efforts and leadership in the community, the Oklahoma City Council renamed a street in his honor July 2006.
Dr. Reed has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City, Inc., and was appointed by past Governor David Walters to the Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Commission, which was a seven-year term. He served as past President of the Coalition of Civic Leadership, past President of the Oklahoma Baptist State Convention for nine years, past President of the Oklahoma Baptist Congress of Christian Education a position he held for 25 years, past Moderator of the East Zion District Association and past Vice President of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education. Currently he is serving in his second term as Vice-President of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc., Western Region; President of the Baptist Minister’s Association, President of the Concerned Clergy for Spiritual Renewal of Greater Oklahoma City, Board Member and Lifetime Member of the NAACP, member of the Oklahoma City Public Schools foundation, and member of the Oklahoma County Community Sentencing Council. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc. He also served as a Board member as well as Instructor in the Minister’s Division of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education and member of the General Council of the Baptist World Alliance. Dr. Reed is a 33rd Degree Mason, member of Great Western Consistory No. 34 Oklahoma City, Ok. Prince Hall Affiliation.
In December 2005, Dr. Reed was inducted into the Oklahoma Afro-American Hall of Fame. Dr. Reed has other awards including: Oklahoma Annual Human Rights Award 2009; Black Heritage Community Service Award 2010; Oklahoma City Branch NAACP Annual Speaker’s Award 2006; The Oklahoma Democratic Party Activist Hall of Fame Award 2010; and the A.C. Hamlin Award 2009.
Dr. Reed has traveled extensively throughout the US, Europe, South America, Asia, Israel, and Egypt.
He was married to late Dr. Patricia F. Reed for 51years at the time of her passing on February 13, 2014. He’s the proud father of two daughters: LaShai Rhone and Johnneese Walter, and the Grandfather of Kaubriana Walter, Derrick Walter, Jr., and Tonia Rhone.
